This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR is one of 1,053 “King of the Road” fastback models constructed during an abbreviated production run from May through July of 1968.

The car have undergone a refurbishment in 2009 that included refinishing the body in black.

Power is provided by a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, and other features include a 3.50:1 Traction-Lok differential, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, quad exhaust outlets, the Interior Décor and Visibility Groups, a Tilt-Away steering column, a Philco push-button AM radio, and a Sport Deck rear seat.

The 428ci Cobra Jet V8 features cast-aluminum valve covers with “Cobra Le Mans” lettering and is fed by a Holley four-barrel carburetor.

Factory-rated output was 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque.

The air pump was removed, has been repaired, and is included in the sale with other associated parts for the air-injection system.

An oil change was performed in preparation for the sale.

The engine block shows a date code of “8D24,” which translates to April 24, 1968.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.50:1 Traction-Lok differential.

The car is one of 38 automatic-transmission fastbacks that left the factory finished in Raven Black with white side stripes featuring integrated GT500KR script.

The car was refinished in 2009 and previously underwent repair work to the driver-side lower quarter panel.

Exterior design elements include a fiberglass hood with a functional ram-air scoop, grille-mounted Lucas driving lights, chrome bumpers and trim, air scoops on the sail panels and rear fenders, a Cobra Jet fuel cap and fender badges, a rear spoiler, and sequential taillights.

Ten-spoke 15″ alloy wheels wear Shelby center caps and are wrapped in 215/65 Goodyear Regatta Touring tires.

GT500 models were equipped with an upgraded suspension consisting of a front anti-roll bar and heavy-duty front coil springs and rear leaf springs.

This example is also equipped with power steering as well as power-assisted front disc brakes and rear drums.

The cabin features the Interior Décor Group, which trimmed the front bucket seats and Sport Deck rear seat in black vinyl with Comfortweave inserts and also added woodgrain trim to the dashboard, consoles, and door panels.

A roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts was standard in Shelby cars, and additional equipment includes a Tilt-Away steering column, an AM radio, a Cobra Jet dash badge, and GT500-branded floor mats.

The Visibility Group included under-dash courtesy lights and illumination in the glovebox, trunk, and engine compartment.

A woodgrain steering wheel with a Shelby centerpiece and a horn ring sits ahead of a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, a clock, and gauges for fuel level and engine temperature.

A Stewart-Warner ammeter and oil-pressure gauge are mounted beneath the radio.

The five-digit odometer shows just under 67k miles.
