This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR is one of 1,053 “King of the Road” fastback models produced during a three-month period from May through July of 1968.

The car was built on July 24, 1968.

Finished in Acapulco Blue over black vinyl, the car is powered by a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.50:1 Traction-Lok differential.

Additional equipment includes power-assisted front disc brakes, power steering, heavy-duty suspension, 10-spoke 15” alloy wheels, the Visibility and Interior Décor groups, a Sport Deck rear seat, a tilt-away steering column, and an AM radio.

The Shelby GT500 model was introduced in 1967, and the “King of the Road” suffix was added when the platform’s final variant was unveiled in April 1968 with power from a 428ci Cobra Jet.

Exterior design elements include a fiberglass hood with a functional ram-air scoop as well as a fiberglass trunk lid with a rear spoiler, sequential taillights, rectangular grille-mounted Lucas foglights, and air scoops on the sail panels and quarter panels.

This example wears a repaint in its original shade of Acapulco Blue (D) accented by white side stripes with integrated GT500KR script along with a Cobra Jet fuel cap and front fender badges.

Ten-spoke alloy wheels wear Shelby center caps and are mounted with E70-15 Goodyear Speedway 350 tires, as is a steel spare housed in the trunk compartment.

Areas of oxidation are noted on the alloy wheels.

Power assistance is provided for both steering and braking, with the latter handled by discs up front and drums out back.

The cabin is trimmed in black vinyl, with the Interior Décor Group adding Comfortweave inserts over the bucket seats and Sport Deck rear seat as well as simulated wood-grain appliqués on the dash, center and overhead consoles, and door panels.

A roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts was standard in Shelby cars, and additional Shelby touches include a Cobra steering wheel hub and a Cobra Jet dash badge.

Additional features include a tilt-away steering column, an AM radio, and the Visibility Group, the latter of which adds under-dash courtesy lights, a glovebox lock, and illumination in the glovebox, trunk, and engine compartment.

Instrumentation includes a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer with a 6k-rpm redline, a clock, and gauges monitoring fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage.

The five-digit odometer shows 75k miles.
